FiveM crashes on launch or "Game crashed": causes and fixes

Updated 2026-11-06

Crashes usually come from a damaged game install, old graphics drivers, mods, or software overlays. Work through these steps from the top.

  1. Restart your PC and try again.
  2. Update your graphics driver from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel directly.
  3. Verify your GTA V game files in Steam, Epic or the Rockstar launcher.
  4. Remove mods. Anything you added to the GTA V folder (ASI files, ReShade, graphics packs) can crash FiveM; move them out and test.
  5. Turn off overlays from Discord, Steam, GeForce Experience and MSI Afterburner.
  6. Clear the FiveM cache (see the connection timed out guide).
  7. Add the FiveM and GTA V folders as exclusions in your antivirus.
  8. Install the latest Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable packages.

When asking for help

Tell staff what you were doing when it crashed, and send the crash window text or screenshot. That lets us tell a local problem from a server one.
