FiveM cannot find GTA V: how to set or reset the game path
Updated 2026-11-06
FiveM needs to know where your legitimate copy of GTA V is installed. If the path changed or was never set, it cannot start.
Reset the game path
- Close FiveM completely.
- Open %localappdata%\FiveM\FiveM.app in File Explorer.
- Delete the file CitizenFX.ini.
- Start FiveM again. It will ask you to select your GTA V folder.
- Pick the folder that contains GTA5.exe (for example, Steam\steamapps\common\Grand Theft Auto V).
Check your game copy
- Launch GTA V once from Steam, Epic or the Rockstar launcher to confirm it runs and is up to date.
- Verify the game files in your launcher if anything looks broken.
- FiveM requires an owned copy of GTA V on PC.
